You Will Be Next!!!

Editor's Note: I bring you this post from Alton Blair, one of the contributors here for the Effect. It refers to the decision of Weyco and a few other companies who have begun to refuse to hire smokers at all and even fire employees who do smoke. They are doing so on the basis that smokers will cost the company far more money for their medical benefits than a non-smoker.

By Alton Blair
I know many of you non-smokers say: "great it's about time we make people stop smoking and stop killing us". I understand companies are forced to pay higher healthcare cost based on the behavior of its employees, but what I do on my free time is my business. When we allow companies to dictate lifestyles in order to determine employment this will spiral out of control. Now it was unheard of not so long ago for a company to require you to urinate into a cup as a prerequisite for employment. We sheepishly accepted this and it has become the standard, but this opens the doors to all sorts of discrimination. I don't use that word lightly. I believe in today's world that word is brought into the fore front far too much, but it is so appropriate in this situation it sickens me. Let's investigate some facts. Smoking is a health risk. With that said so is overeating or having a poor diet. With 30% of Americans obese (Dateline NBC) who's to say your employer won't come to you and say: "Sally I know you had McDonald's for lunch and that is not very healthy, so we are going to have to let you go", or "Bill we have an investment in our employees and since your black and will not have an average lifespan as long as white male, we are letting you go", or "Bob I seen you have 4 drinks at the Christmas party so we feel your drinking will cause health risks, were letting you go". These examples may seem crazy, but if the non-smokers and the smokers don't rally together this could very shortly becomethe reality. Please don't sheepishly accept this as business moving into a positive direction because you don't smoke. I encourage all of you to send an email to Weyco Inc. and tell them this is a ridiculous policy and you will never do business with them. http://www.weyco.com/web/index.jsp

Media's coverage has distorted world's view of Iraqi reality

By LTC Tim Ryan

All right, I've had enough. I am tired of reading distorted and grossly exaggerated stories from major news organizations about the "failures" in the war in Iraq. "The most trusted name in news" and a long list of others continue to misrepresent the scale of events in Iraq. Print and video journalists are covering only a fraction of the events in Iraq and, more often than not, the events they cover are only negative.
The inaccurate picture they paint has distorted the world view of the daily realities in Iraq. The result is a further erosion of international support for the United States' efforts there, and a strengthening of the insurgents' resolve and recruiting efforts while weakening our own. Through their incomplete, uninformed and unbalanced reporting, many members of the media covering the war in Iraq are aiding and abetting the enemy.
The fact is the Coalition is making steady progress in Iraq, but not without ups and downs. So why is it that no matter what events unfold, good or bad, the media highlights mostly the negative aspects of the event? The journalistic adage, "If it bleeds, it leads," still applies in Iraq, but why only when it's American blood?
As a recent example, the operation in Fallujah delivered an absolutely devastating blow to the insurgency. Though much smaller in scope, clearing Fallujah of insurgents arguably could equate to the Allies' breakout from the hedgerows in France during World War II. In both cases, our troops overcame a well-prepared and solidly entrenched enemy and began what could be the latter's last stand. In Fallujah, the enemy death toll has exceeded 1,500 and still is climbing. Put one in the win column for the good guys, right? Wrong. As soon as there was nothing negative to report about Fallujah, the media shifted its focus to other parts of the country.

After al Qaeda

Charles Krauthammer
Where are we? At this midpoint of the Bush administration, engaged as we are in conflict throughout the world, are we winning?
The great democratic crusade undertaken by this administration is going far better than most observers will admit. That's the good news. The bad news is a development more troubling than most observers recognize: signs of the emergence, for the first time since the fall of the Soviet empire, of an anti-American bloc anchored by Great Powers.

Oliver North: The Other War on Terror

Sixteen civilians, including women and children, were slaughtered on New Year's Eve. A radio journalist was killed by motorcycle-riding assailants as he drove to work last Tuesday. A Catholic priest was murdered last month. The head of state has survived dozens of assassination attempts. Scores of locally-elected officials, mayors and police officers were killed last year. Death squads are not uncommon. Kidnappings, brutal murders of hostages and attacks on civil infrastructure by well-armed bands of terrorists are part of daily life. Notwithstanding the violence, Bush administration officials say that they are optimistic about the future. Quick! What country is this? If you guessed Iraq - you lose! It's Colombia - the other war on terror - the beleaguered democracy less than four hours by air from the United States - that has for more than three years escaped the attention of the so-called mainstream media. This lack of coverage is significant. Though the axiom, "if it bleeds it leads" prevails in most U.S. reporting from Iraq, the potentates of the press have largely ignored what's been happening in Colombia. Perhaps that's because the real story is so hopeful - leading to a conclusion that patient, persistent U.S. assistance really works. And because that's a lesson applicable to Iraq, it has little appeal to the prognosticators of gloom and doom who occupy our editorial suites. What the barons of bombast have chosen not to report are the signs of genuine progress being made in ending decades of bloodletting.

Liberals love America like O.J. loved Nicole

Ann Coulter (archive)
January 6, 2005

Even the United Nations sponge who called the United States "stingy" immediately retracted the insult, saying he had been misinterpreted and that the U.S. was "most generous." But the New York Times was sticking with "stingy." In an editorial subtly titled "Are We Stingy? Yes," the Times said the U.N. sponge "was right on target." This followed up a patriotic editorial a few days earlier titled "America, the Indifferent."
America's stinginess is a long-standing leitmotif for liberals – which is getting hard to square with their love for America. When it comes to heaping insults on America, U.S. liberals are the nation's leading donors.
In 2003, the Center for Global Development – funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, despite the fact that it could have used that money on future tsunami victims – concluded that the U.S. ranked 20th out of 21 nations in helping poorer nations. This came as a surprise, inasmuch as the U.S. gives the highest absolute amounts of foreign aid to the developing world.
